When will Prayuth summon Bhumibol?

From the moment Prayuth's tanks rolled out onto the streets of Bangkok, the General has sold us the idea that Thai democracy has "failed" and that the army is simply "sorting out the problem". That claim is false on two levels:

Firstly, neither Prayuth nor his faction of the Thai army are in this for anything either than a personal power trip. Secondly, the problem in Thailand is not democracy, but rather the king and his courtiers who have continuously undermined Thailand's institutions to strengthen their own positions.

The fact is, King Bhumibol, his fanatical royalist yobs, and the army, are the single biggest contributors to Thailand's political instability. Over the last six decades, this trio of hypocrites have played out the same routine with perfect coordination.

The PAD creates the chaos in the name of the king. Bhumibol remains silent, thus endorsing his followers' violent actions. The army steps in to restore "order". If any of this sounds familiar it's because this tried and tested formula, is the army's blueprint for all of Thailand's royally endorsed coups.

When Prayuth talks about making necessary political changes to enable democracy to work, he is not being altogether honest. No coup is ever intended to strengthen democracy. The sole purpose of an army coup is to strengthen the nation' anti-democratic institutions.

If Prayuth seriously wanted to sort out this political mess, he would be better advised to summon king Bhumibol to his army barracks. Maybe, after a good talking to, Thailand's vicious political circle would finally be broken, and democracy could no longer be undermined by Bhumibol and his supporters.

But all Thais know that this is unlikely to happen until Bhumibol dies.
