How long will Bhumibol protect Prayuth from his rivals?

Now that Prayuth's cynical plan to bring "happiness" to Thai people through intimidation, beatings and illegal arrests is well on the way, it might perhaps be a good moment to remind Thailand's new skipper that his army is not quite as happy.

Lately the internet is awash with photographs of Thai soldiers displaying their defiance towards Prayuth's coup with three fingered salutes.

So why is this? Well, the fact is, that Thailand's army has always been made up of rival factions belonging to either elite families or royal circles.

Prayuth is firmly on the royal side, demonstrating clearly the Thai king's approval of the coup and just WHO protects Prayuth from his jealous rivals in the army.

With the protection of king Bhumibol, Prayuth considers himself untouchable, and even appears unworried by the growing dissent among the army ranks.

It's a gamble Prayuth is sure to lose. The General's mistake is to think that the Thai king is loyal to anyone but himself. Selfish Bhumibol hasn't survived this long by being loyal to anyone but his fortune.

Sooner or later, the trouble will start and Prayuth's gamble will be lost as the Thai king looks to rival generals to put right the mess Prayuth Chan-ocha has stirred up.

Thailand's new Skipper was never much of an intellectual, but to overlook the obvious rivalries within the Thai army is just plain dumb.

He'll be lucky if he doesn't end up like Coronel Narongdej.
