Neither the king nor his coups are really Thai.
Thailand's emotionally insecure dictator has banned Thai people from flashing the three fingered gesture borrowed from a Hollywood film "The Hunger Games". The reason? It's foreign, and therefore "unThai".
In the crass logic of the army junta, everything that is foreign, or originates from abroad, is not very Thai and should be discouraged or banned altogether, much like it was in a militaristic Japan in the 1930´s. This attitude will surely rebound on general Prayuth.
It won't take long for Thais to realise that king Phumipon is anything but Thai. Phumipon, or Lek as he was known as a teenager, was born in Boston, USA.
If Prayuth´s theory is correct, then king Phumipon is about as "unThai" as you get. The (Thai?) king was not only born in the US, he couldn't speak a word of Thai until long after he arrived in Thailand. Listen to him make speeches, he still can't speak Thai properly.
Then there's that law Prayuth and his ilk think so important to protect their king: Lèse Majesté. Notice something strange about the spelling of this word? Yup! It's French, and should therefore be banned too.
Wait! What about King Ananda? Nope, he was born in Germany and therefore "unThai" too. But at least Prayuth still has that symbol of pure Thainess: the Thai army in their red Busby uniforms. Nope! The red Busby uniform is British.
Ok, so Coup d'États are very Thai, right? Not really, look at the spelling. It's a French word, not Thai. In fact, everything about Thai culture: the dancing, the numerical system, the alphabet, is influenced by Khmer culture.
brainwashing
So if Prayuth's assertion about what is Thai and what is not, doesn't stand up to scrutiny, why would Prayuth make such a statement? Why indeed.
Incompetent dictatorships become corrupt very quickly, simply because criticism is discouraged. To stem criticism and encourage unity, juntas always fall back on basic propaganda methods based on crude nationalism.
By identifying all things Thai, Prayuth is attempting to create a Thai myth, much like Hitler created the Aryan myth which helped unite Nazi Germany, and we all know how that ended.
For the army generals in Bangkok, the creation of the Thai myth and the rejection of all things foreign, is an essential step towards the isolation of Thai society and the creation of the myth that Thailand is unique from other nations.
That false uniqueness argument, is one often employed by oppressive regimes to argue that foreign concepts such as human rights and democracy cannot be applied to their nation.
The process of isolation, or as Sonthi put it: "the closing up of Thailand for five years", has already begun. Prayuth's propaganda machine is now at full speed manufacturing the Thai myth which will serve to brainwash Thai people into accepting dictatorship as a normal, perfectly "Thai" thing.
