Sulak Sivaraksa is not one to mince his words, which is why whenever he speaks people listen up and take note. Sulak is even known to have been a close personal friend of the Thai king in the past. That makes him a very influential man in Thailand.

His latest words will have a profound effect on the outcome of the coup in Thailand and are sure to send general Prayuth into a hysterical panic.

According to Sulak, Thailand's new Skipper will be given "a three month grace period" and if things do not change for the better, Prayuth will be removed.

Not surprisingly, Sulak's comments have not been widely reported in a highly censored, army controlled press, perhaps because the army fears the consequences.

General Prayuth desperately wants to send out an image of calm and unity. Everything, says the general, is under control. The truth however, is that Prayuth has his days numbered as dictator.

Thailand's economy is on the brink of entering into recession; the EU has blocked much needed trade agreements because of the coup; and a crisis has opened up with Cambodia over the army's ethnic cleansing of immigrants.

As if that wasn't enough, the Thai king's endorsement of the coup has made him a target for criticism like never before, leading to a full-scale witch-hunt against Thai activists living abroad.

None of this bodes well for Prayuth Chan-ocha, as diplomatic relations with foreign countries over the harassment of those accused of lese majeste hits the headlines and royalists are summoned by foreign police.

lost face

Sulak Sivaraksa and the Thai king go back a long way. Prayuth ignores Sulak's clear warnings at his own peril, especially when elements within the royal army are already disapproving of Prayuth's actions.

Thailand's dictator is now critically injured. The rebel general has lost face because Sulak has dared to criticise him in public, even when Prayuth made it clear that the army was not to be criticised.

Dictator Prayuth and the NCPO should step down immediately, and return Thailand to civilian rule, or risk losing face further and becoming the laughing stock of the world.

Referendum!

With the death of king Bhumibol just around the corner, the issue of the succession is now a hot topic.

The choice presented to Thai people by the elite, is either Vajiralongkorn or Sirindhorn and  never includes the option of establishing a Thai Republic.

In this special Skipper referendum on the monarchy in Thailand, we are offering Thai people the chance to vote on all three options, including a Republic.
