Spain has a new king and Head of State. His name is Felipe (Phillip) a man quickly dubbed "Phillip the brief" because of his unpopularity among the Spanish working class. THEY demanded a referendum on the issue of the monarchy, the government said no.

At first glance, the events in Spain may seem a world away from troubled Thailand, until you realize the true significance of king Bhumibol's message of congratulations to Spain's new unpopular king.

Phillip and Bhumibol go back a long way. The regime in Spain built Bhumibol an exact copy of an aircraft carrier called The Prince of Asturias. The Thai version of the carrier was called The Charki Naruebet.

In return, a theme park called Siam Park was built on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Few people in Spain know that this park was built with stolen Thai public money and that the profits go directly into the pockets of the Thai royal family.

Coronation

King Phillip's coronation was held under almost Marshal law conditions. ALL protests were declared illegal. ALL public display of Republican flags were prohibited. Neighbours were identified by police and told to remove Republican flags from their balconies. In the best North Korean style, people were told to hang state flags instead.

The day of the coronation, 7,000 riot police patrolled the streets. The heart of the capital Madrid, was physically sealed off and snipers were placed on rooftops as police tore down Republican flags along the route taken by the newly crowned king travelling in a car bought by dictator Franco.

What should Thailand do after the death of king Bhumibol?

Referendum!

With the death of king Bhumibol just around the corner, the issue of the succession is now a hot topic.

The choice presented to Thai people by the elite, is either Vajiralongkorn or Sirindhorn and  never includes the option of establishing a Thai Republic.

In this special Skipper referendum on the monarchy in Thailand, we are offering Thai people the chance to vote on all three options, including a Republic.

¡Viva la República!
That evening, riots broke out in Madrid. The videos on Youtube show how riot police charged against Spanish protestors, housewives mainly, old people and dazed tourists. Phillip's coronation quickly turned into a circus, but the media covered it up.

What for Spain's royal family has been a public relations disaster, could be deemed a huge success for Thailand. General Prayuth and the Palace circle have been taking notes, and they are very impressed with what they saw.

There can't be many people in Thailand who don't know that the latest coup is directly linked to the Thai succession. Spain's king Phillip may be unpopular, but that's nothing compared to the potential problems faced by the Chakris.

The transition in Spain has been messy, true, but the crackdown on Republican sentiments has been bloodless and perfectly controlled, a luxury for Thailand's army and one that the elite can only dream about.

When seen from this perspective, king Bhumibol's message of congratulations to king Phillip takes on a whole new meaning, and could even be said to be loaded with symbolism. Thailand's transition is unlikely to go quite as smoothly, even with the country under Marshal law and a hardline dictatorship in place.
