Four weeks after launching his coup against Thailand's legitimate government, and the nation's "great leader" Prayuth Chan-ocha, is where he always yearned to be: at the top of his glorious cult nation.
The concert held in his honour in Bangkok yesterday was reminiscent of George Orwell's 1984, with images of Prayuth being flashed up on the screen above an adoring crowd of fascist admirers singing their little hearts out.
Prayuth actually believes that he is revered by Thai people and that his spin on the coup is credible. But like the Thai king who refuses to lift 112 for fear of discovering that he is not worshiped, Prayuth continues to rule under marshal law for the same reason.
The endless flattery and adulation directed towards Thailand's new cult leader is both comical and pathetic. Comical because the false flattery is obviously forced, and pathetic because Prayuth is deluded enough to believe that it's not.
Like all nasty dictators, Prayuth knows that he can only maintain this lie through fear and coercion, hence his refusal to lift military law. The general is frightened that Thai people will take to the streets again in peaceful protest and expose "the great leader" as a fraud.
Why else would Prayuth maintain Marshal law? There have been no violent reactions to the coup, therefore sending the army into the streets and sentencing anti-coup protestors in military courts cannot be justified.

It is now apparent that the military coup in Thailand has failed. Prayuth gambled that after an initial period of resistance his junta would be accepted by both Thai people and the international community. That has not happened.
The general is fearful of the future and clearly isolated, turning to his cult followers for loyalty and support while crushing his detractors under his army boot. A reaction that reveals just how insecure Prayuth Chan-ocha is.

The choice presented to Thai people by the elite, is either Vajiralongkorn or Sirindhorn and never includes the option of establishing a Thai Republic.
